Any other option is a risk nobody should accept. I will look more closely into this later this afternoon. I like the idea of other Bitcoin clients to access the network rather than everyone using QT. I agree that it is far better that the team work on improving the network than the client but you need another set of alternatives that are good to begin with: You sound a little bit entitled when you say "why has this problem not been addressed yet? Its a little unreasonable bitching about it on the internet instead of doing something about it yourself.
What percentage of users can read documentation and edit a config file? I suspect all of them have the ability either to write code to do it or pay someone to write the code to do it. And then think "I will pay someone to fix this". If you want it fixed, put up a bounty. I'm sure there are loads of people who would do it if you put up an appropriate reward.
If you won't fix it yourself, and you won't pay someone to fix it, then stop bitching about it as you're just poisoning the community. Each to their own, i think your attitude is poisoning the community by scaring away average users.
So i guess we have a difference of opinion. I did not demand that this this be fixed right away, I asked why this has not been fixed and how I could resolve the problem.
Wow, someone that gets it! The problem is that bitcoin-qt is not funded, so people can go around screaming they want a certain feature all they want, but it's not just going to happen out of altruism. There is no bitcoin "government" that takes cares of the desires of people that scream the loudest. A possible option for funding that is being discussed would is to add a "donate" button to the client. In any case, if someone were to put up a bounty for specifically this issue I'm sure it will be solved pretty soon.
I certainly would if I could but I don't know how. I think the issue here is a "Curse of Knowledge". Those with the skill to change this in Bitcoin-QT forget that something like this, that they deem very easy, is an overwhelming problem for a novice. I know a bit about computing but this is not something I have ever had to overcome before as most developers make this a simple option in the program or during installation.
Then put up a bounty for someone who can code. All the developers except Gavin are working on this in their spare time. Saying something "should" be done is thinking one can dictate what they should do with their spare time. You are not being very helpful or constructive in my opinion. I'll admit i was a tad grumpy when I posted it at first, spent some time last night till the early hours looking on forums using the shortcut version or using a mklink command and couldn't get either to work and this morning still not even a tiny bit of progress: It's at the point that I actually need help if I am going to stand a chance at doing this.
What everyone needs is cold storage. Then spread the word please, people keep ignoring Armory, but it's the only sane solution to bitcoin security. I hate this line of thinking. You want bitcoin to be usable by the average human. The average human does not have any sort of coding skills, nor any idea how to even post a bounty for that feature, nor a significant enough bounty for the feature to be implemented even if they do post a bounty.
The average users want this feature and that alone should increase its priority even though none of those that want it know how to code it or even care enough to post a bounty for it. This guy posted a RANT, saying that it's an easy fix, and complaining to Gavin by name about something that has numerous workarounds including changing clients, or creating a shortcut.
Then when challenged to fix it since he claims it's easy , he says he doesn't know how. He has no idea of the priorities of the developers, has no idea how hard an "easy" fix is, and has no politeness in his request. The priority of developers will be security which is good , but after that part, they tend to favor new and interesting features, rather than polishing everything else.
This is a general trend among developers. And I think that voicing these complaints points the developer to making bitcoin more friendly in essential points. Those that have a fair understanding of programming and able to change this issue with relative ease I bet you fall into this one. Those who have a basic or average understanding of computer programming who do not know how to solve this problem. If bitcoin is to go mainstream it needs people in Camp B and the people in Camp A, are the ones that can make that happen, by using their skills to solve the problems and helping those who are having trouble Like Uguuuu above.
You can hardly expect an average person to know that 1. Bitcoin QT is opensource meaning anyone can fix this problem 2. That the person knows how to fix the problem and register the changes to QT 3.
Knows where to go to ask for someone to make such a fix 4. We are living in a world with a wide spectrum of knowledge in all matters including computer science. I urge you to keep this in mind.
